On 23 January, European Alliance group organised a lunchtime briefing on the consequences of BREXIT for Scotland, with a focus on the areas of employment and investment. The briefing was given by Ms Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs in the Scottish Government.

On 15 January, Scotland's Prime Minster Nicola Sturgeon presented Scottish Government's report analysing consequences of different Brexit scenarios which forecasts that Scotland’s economy may lose up to £16bn (€18bn) a year as a result of the UK leaving the EU. Ms Hyslop presented the report and offered first-hand information on how Scottish Government sees the Brexit process and what measures it is considering in order to mitigate its negative implications for the country's economy.

It is clear from the Scottish government's perspective that a Brexit which results in the UK being outside the European Single Market and Customs Union will have the most damaging consequences for Scotland. The Government believes that Scotland’s future is best served by continued EU membership, in line with the wishes of the Scottish people as expressed in the referendum in 2016. However, if Brexit proves to be inevitable, Ms Hyslop argued that Scotland's interests are best protected by the UK remaining inside the European Single Market and Customs Union and maintaining the freedom of movement within the EU.
