On 12 March 2015 NAT commission organised the seminar entitled Action Plan for the future of organic production in the EU: time for regions to act. Organic production is an overall system of farm management and food production that combines best environmental practices, a high level of biodiversity, the preservation of natural resources and the application of high animal welfare standards, and a production method in line with the preference of certain consumers for products using natural substances and processes.

Enda Stenson, Member of Leitrim County Council, EA coordinator for the NAT commission stressed that the introduction of organic products in catering in educational and government bodies, care institutions and businesses can provide a stimulus to the development and organisation of local organic production. The introduction of organic products in catering facilities is often part and parcel of local policy measures/decisions. He called for efforts to ensure school canteen food consists of healthy, organic and/or local products.
