Cllr Linda Gillham, EA member and rapporteur on the Green paper on a European Strategy on Plastic Waste  met on 18 June with different stakeholders to discuss about  ways to improve the current legislative framework to address the specific issue of plastic waste.
Representatives from municipalities, regions as well as from industries and environmental organisation had the opportunity to exchange their opinions and to contribute to the drafting of the rapporteur opinion which will be discussed and voted upon at the next meeting of the ENVE commission in Lithuania in September.

Plastic waste, is not specifically addressed in EU waste legislation. Indirect references can be found in the Packaging Directive, the Framework Directive on waste, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, REACH regulation, Labelling  Regulation and some Regional Seas Conventions.

Although Plastic has a value, this is too often disregarded. The amount of plastic produced is tremendous and only half of it is currently recovered or recycled with this having a negative impact on the environment, especially on the marine ecosystems.
