In the presence of Commissioner Canete and the CoR President Markkula, CoR members from across Europe reinstated their commitment to tackling climate change by promoting the Covenant of Mayors at local level.
To date more than 6,700 local authorities - representing more than 200 million people - have signed up to the Covenant of Mayors, an initiative launched in 2008 that commits cities and regions to achieve ambitious targets when it comes to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The EA President Mr Stanisław Szwabski has shared the example of his city, Gdynia, that has signed up to the Covenant and has been taking a wide range of environmentally friendly initiatives in the area of transport, housing and energy performance of buildings.
