During the last Plenary session Mr Stanislaw Szwabski, spoke to Mr J-C Juncker, President of the European Commission about the need  of solidarity in enlargement and neighbourhood policies of the EU.

"The process of uniting Europe/of unification of Europe is first of all a peace project.  An extension of the area of freedom and peace, in particular covering broad areas of the neighbourhood of the European Union should be the overarching European policy goals.  I would like to underline that in the field of external relations, the Union must have a strong voice.  I believe that we must aim to increase the effectiveness of the enlargement policy, negotiations with applicant countries, as well as to ensure a strong neighborhood policy.  Neighbours of the European Union should receive substantial support in the development of democracy and prosperity in their respective countries.  Solidarity in this area will pay us back many times over.  We, the EU, should encourage governments to promote the attitudes of solidarity among its citizens in the field of neighborhood policy, enlargement and development aid.  This should be a policy tool in the revised Lisbon Treaty, in the form of a specific solidarity tax.  Let's believe that we can afford it!" – he said when addressing the European Commission's President
