From Blue Deals to Wind Power: Key Takeaways from the ENVE Commission’s 21st Session

The session opened with a debate on the Swedish EU Presidency’s outcomes, followed by the adoption of three opinions.

Firstly, one on a "Global Green Deal: harmonising global frameworks for climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development".

The second, titled “Towards a resilient water management to fight climate crisis within an EU Blue Deal” is part of the Committee of the Regions' advocacy for an EU Blue Deal on water resilience, which includes also the opinion "Creating an EU Blue deal from an agriculture and rural development perspective across EU Regions" from our member Karl Vanlouwe. These opinions are projected for voting in the CoR’s June plenary session.

Finally, one on "the role of local and regional authorities in the transition towards a circular economy", a referral from the EU Belgian Presidency.

The afternoon counted with two important moments for the European Alliance Group. Firstly a debate on communicating the green transition with the foundations of each political group. For the EA group, Elixabete Arrieta from the Coppieters Foundation intervened. She insisted on the vulnerability of islands and minorities in front of climate change and the impact of mass tourism and showcased communication between the population and stakeholders as a necessary solution to tackle those issues.

The second moment was the exchange of views on our opinion on the European Wind Power Action Plan of the European Commission. Our member Allessia Claes sustained that the wind power sector plays a pivotal role in achieving our climate goals. And insisted that public acceptance, cross-border cooperation, and green hydrogen would be some of the main topics the EU would need to address in the following years in order to support the European wind power industry, and at the same time achieve the Green Deal transition.
