On 8th October at a debate with the President of the REGI committee of the European Parliament, Younos Omarjee, Pierluigi Marquis, EA member and Councillor of the autonomous Region Valle d'Aosta called on European Parliament to secure adequate funding for cohesion policy and support for disadvantaged areas beyond 2020.

We call on the European Parliament to ensure that cuts to cohesion policy are reduced to the minimum and to defend the position of the outgoing European Parliament whereby 5% of ERDF resources would be allocated to disadvantaged territories with natural, geographic or demographic handicaps such as mountainous, insular and sparsely populated areas.

Moreover, Mr Marquis pointed out that new rules to allocate resources to territorial cooperation programmes based on population density risks penalizing mountain areas and a solution still needs to be found.
