Iwaniuk calls for enhanced support for isolated rural areas during CAP Debate

During today's debate on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) with Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski, Mr Krzysztof Iwaniuk called for the reinforcement of the CAP's Second Pillar to better support isolated rural areas in the EU.

Mr Iwaniuk highlighted that the CAP has been a cornerstone of European integration, supporting farmers and ensuring food security for over six decades. However, as the EU faces new challenges such as food security, climate change, biodiversity loss, future enlargements, sustainability, innovation, and equity, it is imperative to re-evaluate and rethink this crucial policy.

Commissioner Wojciechowski emphasized the need for a greener, more resilient CAP. His vision includes increased support for small and medium-sized farms, the promotion of organic farming, and the integration of advanced technologies to enhance productivity while preserving natural resources. "These initiatives are essential for transitioning to a sustainable agricultural future that aligns with the European Green and Blue Deals," responded Mr Iwaniuk.

"However, the path forward is not without its challenges. Balancing environmental goals with the economic viability of our farmers requires careful consideration. We must ensure that the CAP continues to provide robust financial support while incentivizing sustainable practices. Additionally, equitable distribution of funds across member states and fair treatment of all farmers, regardless of size, are crucial to maintaining solidarity within the European Union," he added.
