Maupertuis: Shared management and partnership with regions are non-negotiable principles for a renewed cohesion policy

During the CoR Plenary debate on the resolution for a renewed Cohesion policy, president of the Corsican Assembly and EA group member Nanette Maupertuis, stressed the need for a cohesion policy that is able to address current and emerging challenges while maintaining its main principles.

In her intervention in front of the Committee of the Regions' plenary in Brussels, Ms. Maupertuis underlined that the EU's Cohesion policy "demonstrated to work and adapted to react to several criss. But "it cannot do all alone.", she added. Other policies should contribute to greater cohesion and address disparities, notably in achieving green transition and addressing the digital divide", she noted.

Ms Maupertuis, also warned about further centralisation in the management of EU funds.

"Simplification does not mean excluding layers of local governments.  If the Cohesion Policy is to evolve to align with times, this should not be at the expense of its main principles. Shared management, and partnership principle are non-negotiable principles for a renewed cohesion policy.

Local players must remain at the heart of its implementation, guaranteeing equity across the EU's territories. This is all the more important for regions covered by Articles 174 and 349 of the TFEU, as cohesion policy enables these territories to benefit from investments tailored to their structural constraints. This place-based approach is crucial not only today, but will be even more so tomorrow when we welcome new members into our large European family" she concluded.
