Repaský highlights local strategies to combat child poverty

During the debate of the opinion on a European Child Guarantee, member of the Prešov regional parliament and EA group member, Miloslav Repaský placed the issue of local and regional involvement in tackling child poverty under the spotlight. As he explained, the amount of children who live below poverty levels in the world is at an alarmingly high rate of 25% of the total.

In the words of Mr Repaský, "We need a European network of efficient strategies" where local and regional authorities are involved in providing "effective alternatives". In that regard, he pointed to effective small-scale interventions such as free meals in canteens, psychological counselling, or awareness-raising and preschool initiatives on hygiene, as means to tackle this dramatic issue.

Mr Repaský concluded his intervention by reminding the plenary of the importance of funding solutions to child poverty, not only as a way to improve social conditions but also as a way to build a better Europe. As he said, "Money spent on children is an investment […] every euro invested in children is an investment in the future of Europe".
