​During the 160th plenary of the Committee of the Regions, the debate with Mr Vadym Boychenko, Mayor of Mariupol, Ukraine on the 2023 enlargement package was followed by the statement on behalf of the EA Group by Mr Dariusz Strugała, Mayor of Jaraczewo and EA Group Vice-President.

The decision of the European Council, dated 14 December 2023, to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, and to grant candidate country status to Georgia, marks a pivotal moment in their pursuit of a European future.

This decision is not merely a bureaucratic formality; it is a recognition of the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of these nations towards fulfilling the criteria for EU membership. It acknowledges their dedication to building multi-level democracies, upholding the rule of law, and aligning with the values of the single market. It represents a beacon of hope for a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous future within the European Union.

During the debate, Mr Strugała gave strong support to LRAs in Ukraine in these difficult times and reaffirmed EA commitment with EU enlargement, founded on democracy and prosperity for Ukraine.
