Vanlouwe: Innovation is the backbone of a resilient European economy

During the 162nd plenary session of the Committee of the Regions, Karl Vanlouwe, president of the European Alliance (EA) group and member of the Flemish Parliament, emphasised the critical role of innovation in building a resilient economy during a debate with the president of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calviño. He highlighted the growing global competition from the USA and China, stressing the need for Europe to remain at the forefront of technological advancements.

In his speech, Mr Vanlouwe underlined the EA Group's advocacy for investments in green growth, advanced technologies, and high-quality infrastructure. He also stressed the importance of sustainable mobility and the efficient use of natural resources. Vanlouwe called for a flexible EU framework to encourage both private and public investments, promoting sustainable development and economic growth.

He encouraged Local and Regional Authorities to make use of available resources and innovative financial instruments to mobilise additional funding for long-term investments. This approach, he noted, aims to create a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic innovation ecosystem across Europe.

Mr Vanlouwe further emphasised that fair and balanced investment distribution is crucial. He argued that investments should foster competition across all member states, creating a level playing field for companies throughout the EU. He stated: “Avoiding over-subsidisation of domestic firms is essential for maintaining a strong and resilient European economy.”

In conclusion, Mr Vanlouwe urged a balanced approach to innovation. “Let us embrace innovation, but let us do so with fairness and responsibility,” he said. “This will pave the way for a stronger, more resilient European economy where innovation drives growth and prosperity for all.”
