In a Committee of the Regions debate with Vytenis Andriukaitis, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, which was dedicated to the topic of reducing food waste Cllr Tony Buchanan called for more action at Local, National and EU level on combatting food waste.

He highlighted the Scottish Government's pledge to reduce food waste by 33 per cent by 2025, which will put Scotland at the forefront of global action to tackle food waste. This would also put Scotland on track to deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving food waste by 2030 and has the ambition to go beyond any proposal at EU or UN level.

Cllr Buchanan added that it would not be the national government but local government that will make or break that ambition. Local authorities are working on how they can best do it in a way that is commensurate with their resources.
