On 10 October, the European Committee of the Regions plenary session held a debate on the Catalan crisis which saw Mr Amadeu Altafaj, Representative of the Government of Catalonia to the EU presenting the current situation and putting a passionate case for Catalonia to the members of the CoR.

During the debate, the European Alliance group President Karl Vanlouwe made the following plea to the EU:

  • to condemn the use of violence against people who only wished to exercise their right to vote
  • to insist on political dialogue as the way forward between the Catalan and Spanish governments
  • to call for international or EU mediation in the dispute

Ms Mairi Gougeon, member of the Scottih Parliament, reiterated the call for a dialogue and added that ruber bullets, tear gas, attacks on emergency services and ordinary members of the public have no place in Europe.
