Councillor Anthony Buchanan has today called for a more coordinated European migration policy with member states’ moral responsibility to tackle the crisis at its heart. Speaking at the Committee of the Regions’ 109th Plenary session in Brussels, Councillor Buchanan raised his points with Mr Domenico Manzione, Secretary of State for Internal Affairs, Italian Presidency of the European Council.

After the Plenary session Councillor Buchanan said,

“Member States cannot shrink from their moral responsibility to build a coordinated humanitarian response on European migration policy. Today, I took the opportunity to raise awareness of the urgent need for member states with coastal regions to rise to the tragic challenge migrants face.

Migrants who reach Ceuta, Lampedusa, Crete and Calais are not looking for the land of their dreams - they are looking to escape from war, oppression, famine and violence. We must stand up for the principles of the European Union and support these desperate people. Solidarity is at the heart of the European project - it’s time we put that principle into practice.”
