On Tuesday 8 October, during the Committee of the Regions 136th plenary session, members debated the mitigation measures at the local and regional level to cope with a no-deal Brexit. A number of European Alliance members intervened during the debate, showing the far-reaching and the severe impact such withdrawal will have upon the regions they represent.

President of the EA group and member of the Flemish parliament, Karl Vanlouwe, highlighted the impact a no-deal Brexit will have in Flanders. With up to 30,000 jobs being at risk if no deal is reached, the protection of these jobs must a priority for any mitigation efforts.  EA member and East Renfrewshire Councillor, Tony Buchanan, emphasised how important it is for Scotland to have continued access to European programmes after 2020, in particular, those concerning European Territorial Co-operation. EA member and Leitrim County Councillor, Enda Stenson, stressed the devastation a hard border would cause to border towns in the Republic of Ireland, undoing the years of healing that the regions have undergone.
