On the 18th June, the Committee of the Regions hosted a Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) event that covered energy transition and decarbonisation of EU islands. The event was introduced by European Alliance member, Councillor Andrew Cooper (Kirklees County Council, UK), who emphasised the important role that islands will play in the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Cllr Cooper highlighted that the geographic position of islands gives them access to substantial wind, tides, and waves as potential sources of energy, with which they should be able to work towards EU climate goals. The event went on to cover technical issues that islands face in this regard. The participants agreed that a 'one-size fits all' policy approach will not suffice, as EU islands vary significantly; also, there is a lack of direct dialogue between islands and the EU that hampers efficient development. Looking forward, cohesion policy and the development of 'smart islands' will be critical for islands in striving towards the environmental goals of the EU.
