On 26 March, during the ENVE meeting, members discussed the opportunities provided by the current pandemic for the implementation of the Green recovery.
As stated in the CoR opinion on the Green Deal, drafted by the EA coordinator Andries Gryffroy members and speakers highlighted the crucial role of regions and cities in the preparation of national recovery plans while stressing that they will be the ones who will implement the recovery measures and Green Deal on the ground.
Nanette Maupertuis, member of the executive council of Corsica, highlighting specific challenges of insular territories that highly depend on fossil fuels, stated that Green transition must be ambitious but also fair and cost-effective for citizens and business. She also stressed the importance to invest in new technologies and marine renewable energy while taking into account the key role of ports.
Members also discussed the opinion on the climate ambition towards 2030 targets ahead of the global climate change summit, the COP 26, which will take place later in the year in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ms Maupertuis, during the debate, recalled the CoR position and the need to promote emerging local climate pacts with citizens and integrate the efforts of regions and cities into Nationally Determined Contributions through the development of Locally and Regionally Determined Contributions.
