On 4 May the ENVE commission met to discuss the EU flagship initiatives Energy Union and the climate change negotiations and the contribution of local and regional authorities. The ENVE commission also discussed the opinion of the EA member Rhodri Glyn Thomas on developing the potential of Ocean Energy.

Stewart Maxwell, Vice President of the EA group and member of the Scottish Parliament highlights the objective of Energy Union to make the EU less dependent on fossil fuels and calls for a clear, stable and ambitious legislative framework to support the development of renewable energy sources that would enhance the competitiveness of the EU as well as ensure indefinite access to cleaner energy sources. He finally added that Scotland is already investing in the next generation of renewables as it possesses huge wave and tidal energy resources and the potential exists to generate more electricity than is currently needed from the waters around the Scottish coast.
