During the debate on the future of the EU in the presence of the MEPs Elmar Brok, Mercedes Bresso and Guy Verfhostadt, the  EA Group member Karl Vanlouwe made a plea for a comprehensive reform of the EU.

The latest elections results across the EU do provide clear signs that the EU does not have sufficient support. The EU must change to bridge the gap between the EU institutions and the citizens, said the member of the Flemish Parliament.

He added that national and regional parliaments have too little influence and the early warning mechanisms is not working appropriately as it does not give them enough time to react.

It is necessary to promote a culture of subsidiarity and an efficient multilevel governance system whereby decisions are taken at the most appropriate level and a coordination mechanism between national and regional parliaments is established to make sure the views of subnational government are duly taken into account, he added.
