SEDEC: McCarthy appointed rapporteur on the New European Bauhaus; McDonnell discusses homelessness

During the meeting of SEDEC on the 1st October 2021, EA group President, Cllr Kieran McCarthy was appointed rapporteur on the Communication on the New European Bauhaus. The New European Bauhaus, introduced in NextGenerationEU, is a creative and interdisciplinary initiative, convening a space of encounter to design future ways of living, situated at the crossroads between art, culture, social inclusion, science and technology. It brings the Green Deal to our living places and calls for a collective effort to imagine and build a future that is both sustainable and inclusive.

The first exchange of views on the opinion will take place at the next SEDEC meeting in December.

In the following discussions on the local and regional perspective on eradicating homelessness in the European Union, Cllr Declan McDonnell highlighted the situation of the homeless in his city of Galway, Ireland. According to Cllr McDonnell "in my city of Galway alone there are 1,157 homeless people, of which 350 are children". He added that "this is the area where we need to act first, these figures are from August 2021, winter will be upon us and these numbers will only get worse". He called for the provision of transient housing as a priority, while more permanent solutions are found.
