Stenson calls for more partnerships at local government level in the context of the EU – UK agreement

In a debate with Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission on the role of local and regional government in fostering relations between the EU and the UK, Cllr Enda Stenson called for more partnerships and programmes for regions of the EU to work with the devolved Nations in the UK and also for new programmes for city and county twinning.

During the debate in the European Committee of the Regions plenary, Cllr Stenson thanked the Commission Vice President for the EU's flexibility in finding the recent solution on medicines but strongly criticised the British government on their recent attempt to restrict EU citizen rights in Northern Ireland.

Vice President Šefčovič responded by highlighting that the Northern Ireland protocol is key to protecting the Good Friday Agreement and ensuring no hard border on the island of Ireland.
