On 20 November in Brussels, Mayor of town and municipality of Jaraczewo Strugała Dariusz presented at the NAT Commission meeting the system of distributing food to deprived people in his municipality.  Municipality of Jaraczewo has engaged with Wielkopolski Bank Food in Poznań, which is a non-governmental organisation, to distribute free of charge food which would otherwise be wasted.

"Large quantities of food are wasted each year. We produce and buy too much, and the problem of surplus food has been on the agendas of a number of institutions and organisations for several years now. Worldwide, there is a very stark contrast between European countries and, for example, countries in Africa. The problem of hunger in Africa should be addressed at international level. Meanwhile, a local authority's role is to ensure that food from the local market is channelled towards those in needs – e.g. in terms of catering in hospitals or schools and supporting the poorest families. To this end, an appropriate mechanism to distribute this food needs to be developed. And this is happening in Jaraczewo, the town that I represent"- Mr Dariusz Antoni Strugała highlighted.

"Within 12 years of implementation of this project we have distributed more than 200 tonnes of food products with a total value of almost one million PLN.  Each year of this form of support, which has 640 persons 12 years around 7,7 thousand inhabitants, which provided that aid’ — calculated Mr Strugała.  ‘Food supply is distributed by volunteers from fire brigade and other organisations to the staff of municipal social assistance centre. The food that ends up in our warehouse, which often include bread, milk, dairy products, food preparations, dry products, confectionery, juices, fish products, fruits and vegetables,” said Mr Strugała.  He also said  that derived products are of high quality, mostly come from donations of producers and distributors. As a result of Wielkopolski Food Bank per year assistance reaches up to 300 organisations and institutions in the region and, through them, around 100 thousand people in need of assistance. "In its existence bank distributed more than 11,5 thousand tonnes of food. As noted at the NAT meeting, each year is wasted globally around 1,3 billion tons of food, i.e. one third of food produced;  in Europe almost 100 million tonnes of wasted food.  Food waste is also a waste of water and energy — e.g. discarded kilogram of beef, 6 litres of water is lost food surplus" – stated Mr Strugała.
